MediaWiki 1.39 internal error - Installing some PHP extensions is required.

I am installing MediaWiki to a new computer. Installed Ubuntu 22.04,  Apache2, installed PHP 8, Installed MediaWiki.  But on the first run, I get this:

MediaWiki 1.39 internal error

Installing some PHP extensions is required.

Required components

You are missing a required extension to PHP that MediaWiki requires to run. Please install:

What I know about PHP could be written on a postage stamp. I spent most of yesterday trying to find how to get past this error.  Installing the missing extensions was pretty straightforward with apt install, but getting PHP to recognize the extensions has been frustrating.  Nothing I've found on Google has worked, and they are sometimes conflicting or only apply to older versions of Ubuntu.

So, can anyone help me get past this error?
